The day will begin with a meeting at 9.30 am with the local guide at the Abbey of Castel San Vincenzo.

The morning will be dedicated to the visit of Castel San Vincenzo which overlooks the enchanting lake of the same name and the valley from which the Volturno river rises with the Mainarde mountain chain as a background.

And as if the beauty of the landscape was not enough to make the territory precious, in Castel San Vincenzo there is one of the most important archaeological finds in Europe: the Benedictine abbey of San Vincenzo al Volturno, born at the beginning of the third century AD with the intention of founding a place dedicated to monastic life on an area already home to a late Roman settlement.

Not far from the abbey there is an archaeological area, rich in evidence of monastic life, and the suggestive Crypt of Epifanio.

And after delighting your eyes with the historical and scenic beauty of Castel San Vincenzo, you will delight your palate with lunch in a typical restaurant on the shores of the beautiful lake based on the culinary excellence of Molise.

After lunch (always with your guide), you will continue towards Rocchetta a Volturno. In addition to visiting the beautiful village, you will stop at the Museum of the World Wars.

Afterwards, visit of Scapoli. The town is internationally known for its Bagpipes, a musical instrument whose tradition is still kept alive today by skilled craftsmen and manufacturers. We will then visit the Museum of the Bagpipes. In July, the famous International Festival of the Bagpipe is dedicated to this instrument.

Day 3: Agnone & Pietrabbondante, bells, archaeology and... cheese!

Breakfast at the hotel and you will reach Agnone by your own car. Awaiting you will be a guide who will accompany you on a visit to this artistic village rich in history and culture.

During this pleasant walk, sweetened by the pure air that characterizes the Upper Molise, you will be enchanted by the hidden corners of this important religious center, with the presence of 5 convents and 14 churches, surrounded by a breathtaking landscape.

Moreover, this important center has always distinguished itself for its craftsmanship and metalworking. The flagship of this tradition is represented by the presence in the city of the oldest bell foundry in the world: the Pontificia Marinelli foundry. In this ancient foundry, where the touch of art distinguishes each bell without giving in to the modern standardizing technique, bells are handmade for the most prestigious churches in the world.

During the tour, don’t forget a “tasty” stop at the artisan confectionery and candy factory Carosella to taste all sorts of delicacies.

But Agnone is also the home of cheese and dairy products and could not miss a visit to a well-known cheese factory, a unique experience for true connoisseurs. The tour begins with a visit to the historic cellar and the tufa caves where the cheeses are aged.

We will taste a wide selection of cheeses and dairy products: aged cheeses with jams, fantasies of bread, crostini with fragrant ricotta, caprese with mozzarella and cherry tomatoes, ricotta cream with chocolate chips and macaroons, a glass of Tintilia del Molise wine.

And after a refreshing meal, don’t miss a visit to Pietrabbondante, with its interesting archaeological excavations of the Samnite Theatre-Temple from the 1st century B.C., the most important monument of the Samnite world.

In the evening free dinner, return to your accommodation for overnight stay.

Day 4: Montedimezzo, San Pietro Avellana e Vastogirardi

Have breakfast and this morning you will set off to discover one of Molise’s spectacular natural landscapes: the Montedimezzo Reserve, the undisputed queen of the Molise Apennines. The Reserve is entirely covered in woodland and stands at a height of between 900 and 1300 metres.

Here you can admire, with the help of forestry personnel and through paths accessible to even the laziest visitor, “precious miracles” of flora such as the greater ash, hazel and cherry trees and fauna such as hares, wild boar, badgers, roe deer and martens. These splendid pearls of nature have earned the Montedimezzo Reserve inclusion in the prestigious Unesco MAB Programme.

Typical lunch at the farm in Carovilli.

In the afternoon, you will leave for San Pietro Avellana, an enchanting village surrounded by unspoilt nature. Beech and Turkey oak woods, the natural habitat for black and white truffles, and the ruins of a medieval monastery where the Chronicon Volturnense was preserved, frame this splendid village.

Visit to the Museum of Civilisations and Period Costumes. The museum also houses archaeological finds, including a recently exhibited Italic warrior’s tomb found near a road of Roman origin.

This is followed by a visit to Vastogirardi, which preserves ancient dwellings of notable historical and architectural value, the so-called palazziate houses, which belonged to wealthy families. who were part of the country’s so-called “noble class”.

Then visit the medieval castle, a citadel that was used for government, civil and religious functions.

In the evening free dinner and return to your accommodation for an overnight stay.

Day 5: Venafro and Monteroduni

Breakfast at the hotel and departure in your car for an excursion to discover castles and Molise’s delicacies: olive oil and wine.

The day will begin in Venafro where you will meet your guide. Here you will be able to immerse yourself in the history of the Pandone Castle, a beautiful fortress surrounded by olive trees, whose rooms also house the National Museum of Molise, with an exhibition of frescoes, sculptures, canvases, drawings and prints, in an itinerary documenting the chronology – from the Middle Ages to the Baroque – and the different cultural orientations of patrons and artists in Molise.

Strolling through the characteristic streets of the village, you can reach the Olive Park, the only thematic area in the world dedicated to the olive tree, with paths and dry stone walls, mule tracks and artefacts from antiquity to the Second World War. A place where the most famous patricians of Ancient Rome lived. You will savour the undisputed protagonist of Venafro’s culinary tradition, extra virgin olive oil, in a rich and succulent tasting session.

The afternoon will continue, with the guide, in the ancient village of Monteroduni, discovering the history of Prince Giovanni Pignatelli and his noble family, through a visit to the magnificent castle surrounded by centuries-old olive groves and vineyards. We will then descend into the valley, once owned by the prince, to discover the production methods of the two distinctive elements of the area’s gastronomy: olive oil and wine.

An experience to discover the fascinating process of wine-making, in which you will learn about the characteristics of Tintilia, the indigenous Molise grape variety.

Day 6: Carpinone, Roccamandolfi, Santa Maria del Molise... the Water Route

The day begins in the pretty village of Carpinone, dominated by the Calloro Castle, from whose square you can reach the paths leading to the evocative Carpino waterfalls. Defined by the FAI, Fondo Ambiente Italiano, as one of the most fascinating natural spectacles of the area, the waterfalls are surrounded by an almost fairytale-like forest.

Free lunch. Afterwards you will move on to Roccamandolfi.

In the beautiful village, you will visit the Tibetan Bridge and the waterfall nearby. Immersed in greenery, surrounded by rocky walls, the Tibetan Bridge is part of the “Sentiero dei pastori” (Shepherds’ Path), a metal masterpiece thanks to which you can enjoy adrenaline-filled walks at high altitude, suspended in the air.

A few steps away, surrounded by thick vegetation, is the Callora torrent waterfall, one of the most concrete representations of the force of nature, a strong jet of water gushing from the rock face.

To conclude “The Water Route”, you will reach Santa Maria del Molise, a small village at the foot of the Matese which, in addition to its noteworthy historic centre, is famous for its waters, making it a real “water village”. You will visit the scenic and exciting Parco dei Mulini, where picturesque water courses alternate with romantic waterfalls.

In the evening return to the hotel. A delicious dinner with truffle-based delicacies will be waiting for you. The menu includes:

  • Egg poché, pecorino cheese, wild chicory and truffle

Day 7: Fornelli

This morning you will set off in your own car in the direction of Fornelli for an exciting but slow hike.

Together with Serena and her four-legged friends Spriz, Stella, Petunia and Ottone, you will spend a day suitable for young and old. Activities are carried out outdoors in full contact with nature. The animal is the donkey: a valuable companion for this day excursion.

The route starts from the enchanting village of Fornelli and is a 4 km walk (approx. – back and forth) through the Fornelli area. For children it will be a way of getting to know nature and its animal friends. For adults, the walk can be a way to get back on the “slow track” and enjoy the view.

The route will be marked by the “donkey’s pace”, i.e. by the animal’s time and needs. This allows us to enjoy our time away from the usual routine. The walk will end at around 1 p.m..

And after this exciting donkey ride, a tasty lunch will be waiting for you in a typical restaurant in the enchanting village of Fornelli.
In the afternoon, departure for the return journey.
