Day 1: Welcome in Portovenere!
You will arrive in Portovenere in the afternoon and you will have free time available for the visit of the village. But what to see in Portovenere? You can admire the wonderful little harbour, the small church of San Pietro, built on the extreme end of the village.
From there, you can enjoy a beautiful sea view, the 12th century castle, the sanctuary of Madonna Bianca and Byron’s Cave, where the English poet used to go to get inspiration for his poems. At the end of your afternoon in Portovenere, transfer to the hotel in La Spezia or nearby, dinner on your own and overnight.
Day 2: The Apuan Apls & Colonnata
Breakfast at the hotel. For history lovers, traditions and culinary culture we offer a guided tour to discover the Apuan Alps. Impossible not to see those mountains, so white as to make light and seem covered with snow during all the year. The treasure they hold is known for more than two thousand years, but it is only in the last two centuries that the city of Carrara has been inextricably associated with marble.
The itinerary begins with a visit to the Marble Quarry where you can enjoy a unique experience, 2000 years of history, art history and social life lived by these workers. We will tell you about the phases of the ancient manufacturing and transport of marble, the social and hard aspect faced by these workers, which have allowed over the centuries to extract the marble we find all over the world. You will also visit the “Galleria di Ravaccione n.84” (Ravaccione Gallery), the most sensational quarry of Fantiscritti, an immense cathedral dug in the heart of the mountain.
Afterwards, visit to an artisan’s workshop to observe the work of some artisans while they are making their works. Lunch on your own. In the afternoon you will visit Colonnata, a small village nestled among the quarries that now everyone associates with lard, despite its millennial history dedicated to marble. Bread with tomato and the lard cut into thin slices has been the main nourishment of the quarrymen for many centuries.
You will visit an ancient workshop where the famous Colonnata lard (PGI) is produced, you will discover all the secrets related to its processing and preservation and finally you will taste it with other typical products of the area. In the evening return to the hotel, dinner on your own and overnight.

At the end we recommend a walk along the picturesque streets to discover many characteristic shops in the centre, with a short stop at a pastry shop to taste the typical Sarzan Spungata. Afterwards, we recommend a visit to Luni with its vast archaeological area and the beautiful Museum.
