Day 1: Gavi and its hills
You will arrive in the afternoon at Alto Monferrato, one of the most southern parts of the province of Alessandria. The tour guide will take you to the Fort of Gavi, an ancient stronghold built on a hill from which you can watch over the village of Gavi and the surrounding countryside that are just a few kilometres away from the border with Liguria.
Then, you will visit a beautiful estate with a historic wine cellar where you can taste wines that have made this area famous in the world. In the evening transfer to a wonderful Relais with a magnificent view of the surrounding hills. Dinner in a typical restaurant with local specialties, truffle and overnight.
Included: Guided visit to the Fort of Gavi, visit to the historic wine cellar with wine tasting, dinner and accommodation
Day 2: Barolo and the Langhe
Breakfast at the Relais and a full day visiting the Barolo and Langhe area with a private tour guide, located in a very special area: protected by the Alps to the North, West and South and characterized by an environment with great biodiversity. The climate, therefore, is exceptionally favourable for viticulture: thanks to the cold continental temperatures and well-defined seasons, the grapes can exalt particularly fine and intense aromas. Barolo is born in these conditions and its name means “low place” because, although it is located on the top of the hill overlooking the valley towards Alba, it is surrounded by higher hills that protect it from the weather and extreme airflow.
After a walking tour of the village, home of the famous wine produced with Nebbiolo grapes, you will enjoy a Barolo wine tasting in a beautiful building with historical wine cellar where you can also buy wines and other peculiar products of the region. The tour lasts about 30 minutes and includes the tasting of the most representative wines, learning the history of a wine cellar where this wine was born, in the heart of Langhe and protected by hills. As French tradition suggests, this wine was called Barolo after the city where it was first produced. No one at that time could imagine that it was destined one day to be king: the king of wines, the wine of kings.
After the tasting, we will continue our visit to the Langhe region: we will stop at Belvedere of La Morra for an incredible view over the countryside. Lunch on your own.
Possible stop at another wine cellar for a wine tasting. The excursion ends with a guided tour in Alba, the city of white truffles, where it will be possible to buy “the white gold”. Dinner on your own and return to the Relais.
Visited: Barolo and the Langhe
Included: Guided tour of Barolo, wine cellar tour with Barolo tasting, guided tour of the Langhe and Alba, accommodation
Day 3: The Cinque Terre Park
Breakfast at the Relais and transfer by your own means to La Spezia. Full day dedicated to the discovery of the beautiful Cinque Terre Park with a guided excursion, an area where sea and land merge and create a unique and suggestive area.
Cinque Terre have been inaccessible from the ground for centuries, isolated by steep mountains and valleys on one side and the sea on the other. Thanks to its isolation, the uncontaminated charm of this area has been protected by a World Heritage Site and a National Park.
Accompanied by our expert tour guide, you will discover this beautiful coast and the marvellous Cinque Terre towns: Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza and Monterosso, following the Sentiero Azzurro. It is the most famous and well-known path, traced over the centuries by those who used it to move around because it connected the Cinque Terre villages among them (in some parts it is a real mule track that winds along the sea). During the day you will visit a local wine cellar, where you will discover the various stages of processing and cultivation and where you can taste typical wines and local products with the opportunity to visit the vineyard. Lunch on your own.
To conclude in the best way this wonderful day in the Cinque Terre, you will enjoy a delicious aperitif at sunset aboard a typical Ligurian boat. Transfer to a luxury hotel nearby, dinner on your own and overnight.
Visited: Cinque Terre Park
Included: Guided full day trekking in the Cinque Terre Park, wine tasting with typical products, aperitif at sunset on board a typical Ligurian boat, accommodation
Day 4: Portovenere and Palmaria Island
Breakfast at the hotel. Day dedicated to a magical tour that will take you to the discovery of the wonderful village of Portovenere with its little harbour and the small church of San Pietro, built on the extreme end of the village from which you can enjoy a wonderful sea view, accompanied by our expert tour guide.
You can also learn about the history of the Castle, dating back to the 12th century, of the sanctuary of the White Madonna and the Byron’s Cave, where the English poet used to go to get inspiration for his poems. Lunch on your own.
In the afternoon you can enjoy a nice boat ride to get to know the Palmaria, Tino and Tinetto Islands. Palmaria Island, the best known, is full of Mediterranean scrub and steep cliffs; Tinetto is completely bare of vegetation; on Tino, now a military area, we can find vestiges dating back to the eleventh century. On your return to Portovenere, in complete relax, you can enjoy a delicious ice cream with sea view. In the evening, dinner on your own and overnight at the hotel.
Visited: Potovenere, Palmaria, Tino and Tinetto Islands
Included: Full day guided tour of Portovenere and the Gulf of Poets, boat tour of the three islands from Portovenere, ice cream tasting, accommodation
Day 5: Sarzana and Luni
Transfer to Sarzana after breakfast at the hotel. In the morning guided tour of the ancient fortified village, where we still find the Porta Romana (Roman Gate), the Bastioni della Cittadella (Citadel Bastions) and the wonderful Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta. Then, you will walk along the picturesque streets to discover many characteristic shops in the centre, with a quick stop at a pastry shop to taste the typical Sarzan Spungata.
Afterwards, we recommend a visit to Luni with its vast archaeological area and the beautiful Museum. Lunch on your own and departure.
