What to expect

The Matera walking tour will take you on a discovery of the two Sassi, Barisano and Caveoso. After a short introduction to the Sassi, we will set off towards the “Civita”, dominated by the Apulian-Romanesque cathedral.

We will encounter two Baroque churches, the Church of the Purgatory and the Church of San Francesco d’Assisi. Continuing along Via delle Beccherie, we will reach Piazza Vittorio Veneto, we will admire the 19th-century Ferdinandea fountain and the view of the Sasso Barisano.

At the bottom of the Sasso Barisano, we will visit a typically furnished cave house, a demonstration of how the peasant population lived until the mid-1950s.

We will continue the guided tour through the Sasso Caveoso district with a visit to a rupestrian church, completely excavated in the rock and a treasure trove of Italo-Greek monasticism with precious iconographic evidence from the 10th-13th centuries.

The walking tour of Matera ends with a tasty light lunch based on typical local foods and 3 glasses of wine.
