Food breaks in the footsteps of Sciascia

Immerse yourself in the nature of the Sicilian hinterland, with its history, culture and age-old traditions kept alive by the locals. We are in western Sicily, in the province of Agrigento, in the small town of Racalmuto, the birthplace of the famous writer and poet Leonardo Sciascia.

Along the “Writers’ road” – inaugurated to pay homage to the hometowns of great writers such as Pirandello, Camilleri, Tomasi di Lampedusa and Sciascia – lies our magnificent Resort. We will welcome you in a little corner of Sicilian paradise: an old farmhouse dating back to the end of the eighteenth century immersed in the quiet of a timeless landscape, surrounded by olive trees, carob and prickly pears.

You will meet the locals, learn about their most ancient traditions and test your culinary skills, from a cooking lesson to a walking tour through the baroque streets of Sciascia’s hometown.

Day 1: Welcome to the Farm and Resort

Arrival and accommodation in the afternoon. The familiar atmosphere of the estate will make you feel immediately at home. It is the right place to immerse yourself in nature, explore the surrounding area and get to know the cultural and culinary reality of a timeless place made of history and poetry.

After your first meeting with the farm owners and your superior room, you will have some free time to visit the farm, discover the surroundings and explore the nature that lives in it. Accompanying you will be the typical Sicilian “coffa” that you will find in your room. Inside, scissors and gardening gloves, together with a map of the entire estate, will guide you on a pleasant stroll through the garden. You will be encouraged to pick, between one tree and another, any seasonal fruit you find around you.

After savouring the goodness of organic produce, Giulia will lead you to the large expanse of olive trees, the same one you were greeted by on your arrival. Thanks to her story, you will discover the history of the family, the origins of the olive grove and the different types of cultivars from which high-quality extra virgin olive oil is produced.

You will discover everything you need to know about the wonderful world of extra virgin olive oil, taste the types of Sicilian olive oil produced in the farm, learn how to read a label correctly and learn about the methods to be adopted for its correct preservation.

Afterwards, a moment of pleasure and relaxation awaits you in total privacy in the shade of carob, fig and olive trees, sipping excellent local wine and tasting a selection of typical local foods, home-made preserves and the inevitable bread and olive oil.

Day 2: Historic centre of Racalmuto

From sweet to savoury, a wide variety of local foods will get your day off to a good start. After a hearty buffet breakfast full of local delicacies, home-made jams and freshly picked fruit, you and your guide Annalisa will begin a full immersion into Sicilian culture and gastronomy.

Together we will go to the historic centre of Racalmuto for a walk through the past, visiting the places where the famous writer Leonardo Sciascia lived and which inspired him. We will stop at the places of greatest tourist attraction, amidst baroque balconies and scenes of daily life, to discover the essence of the great poet’s birthplace, with its monuments, its many churches and its ancient traditions. We will visit Leonardo Sciascia’s House-Museum, where part of the writer’s “treasure” is kept. Then, we will reach the main street where there is a bronze statue dedicated to the poet.

After a selfie at natural height with one of the most famous icons of Sicilian literature, known the world over for his celebrated novel “Il giorno della Civetta” (The Day of the Owl), we will take you on a live food tour to discover two of the most sought-after delicacies of the Sicilian tradition: nougat and tarallo, a typical sugar and lemon cake from Racalmuto, with an unmistakable aroma and flavour. Historical pastry workshops and show cooking of traditional foods will make your itinerary even more appealing!

At the end of the walking tour, we will return to the farm where, together with Annalisa – now your trusty travelling companion – you will cook a genuine, seasonal lunch with your own hands, following the original recipes of Sicilian grandmothers. We will gather the necessary ingredients from our garden, discovering their scents and colours, and go to the kitchen to open the dances with pots, pans and rolling pin! Between one story and another, you will learn how to make 4 local recipes (starter, first course, main course and dessert) from scratch. You will learn about their history and discover everything that goes into preparing them, step by step. Finally, we’ll share each dish we’ve made at the table, accompanying your exclusive lunch with excellent local wine.

In the afternoon, you are free to relax by the pool and jacuzzi, book a yoga class with our instructor Irene or enjoy a total body massage in the shade of the olive trees. In the evening, to complete your food experience in Racalmuto, we suggest you try one last local speciality, the classic “paesana”, a pizza made with fresh tomatoes, anchovies, pecorino cheese and black olives, made unique by a dough from ancient Sicilian grains. You can savour it in the town’s main square and enjoy a comfortable, homely atmosphere in the historic centre.

Day 3: Favara, Grotte, Racalmuto

If you have not yet tired of Sicilian culinary art, we have one last food experience for you to suggest: Favara to discover and savour! This food tour is certainly the best way to get to know the town, its monuments, its traditions, its food and its inhabitants.

You will stroll through the streets of the historic centre, reaching the beautiful Renaissance church, the “Chiesa Madre” and its characteristic dome (among the largest in Sicily), and then discover Piazza Cavour, the beating heart of the town. There will be no shortage of food tasting experiences, between one little street and another, stopping in historic shops and local pastry workshops to taste, discover and listen to the stories of their owners, who speak of love and passion for their work and their land. You will visit the renowned Farm Cultural Park, a contemporary art museum, and Marzipan, the Sicilian Almond Museum. Finally, conclude your food itinerary with the cannolo experience… Unbeatable!

For those who want to take advantage of the estate’s strategic location and discover the pure nature of its surroundings, they can choose the horseback ride through the Grotte hills. If you are a nature lover and would like to have one last adventure to take with you, this is definitely an experience not to be missed. The history of our family has been linked to these lands for three generations since grandfather Alfonso, an ancient oil merchant, bought the first hectares in the early 1960s and fulfilled his dream of planting an olive grove.

Over time, although engaged in other activities, we have never been able to resist the call of this magical place, so much that in 2010 we decided to enlarge the property and create a farmhouse immersed in rural Sicily. An ancient farmhouse dating back to the late eighteenth century, immersed in the quiet of a timeless landscape surrounded by olive trees, carob trees and prickly pears. A magical place where you can find the balance between body and mind, let yourself be guided to the discovery of ancient traditions and savour simple and genuine food.

It is here that we make our Sicilian extra virgin olive oil PGI, cold extracted from carefully selected olives, harvested by hand and milled within 12 hours.

The farmer, olive oil sommelier, will guide you to discover this extraordinary gift of land and human work, expressing conviviality and culture in a liquid state.
