Day 3: Tour of Romanesque churches

After breakfast, set off on an evocative tour of Romanesque churches. You will reach the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Canneto (or “Santa Maria di Canneto”), in the municipality of Roccavivara (CB). It stands along the Fondovalle del Trigno, in a very evocative environmental context. The current church dates back to the 11th-12th centuries, but the place was already inhabited in Roman times.

Next you will reach Petrella Tifernina. In the historic centre, you will admire the Church of San Giorgio Martire, a monumental complex consisting of three structures from different eras: a Byzantine temple, a Lombard temple and a Romanesque temple. The temple of St. George, which dates back to the 12th century, is one of the oldest and most interesting Romanesque monuments in Molise. At the beginning of the 1900s it was declared a National Monument.

At the end of the visit, leave for Matrice. You will arrive at “Ivana’s kiosk”, where a friendly and skilful housewife, a board, flour, eggs and water will be waiting for you.

You will take part in the preparation of cavatelli, a type of fresh semolina pasta typical of Molise. After making them, you will cook them and enjoy them with an excellent veal and pork sauce.

And after this tasty lunch, you will spend the afternoon visiting the church of Santa Maria della Strada, declared a national monument and one of the architectural jewels of the Molise region.

Back in Campobasso, dinner at the Michelin-starred restaurant “Monticelli” and return for an overnight stay.

Day 4: Sepino, Altilia and farm day

After breakfast you will reach Sepino, one of the most beautiful villages in Italy. You will visit its charming historic centre, which welcomes you with its beautiful Mascherone fountain and an elegant square. There the church of Santa Cristina stands out with its stone colonnade and a suggestive crypt.

Not far from this beautiful village there is a wonderful place: Altilia. It is a small Roman town nestled along the slopes of the Matese, which is one of the most important archaeological sites in Molise. You will spend the rest of the day enjoying nature and good food.

At noon you will arrive at the farm and set off on an exciting excursion to discover the WWF Oasis of Guardiaregia. It is the second largest nature reserve in Italy, located in an area of high naturalistic value. You will discover spectacular karst phenomena: the canyon of the Quirino torrent, the San Nicola waterfall, the caves of Pozzo della Neve and Cul di Bove, among the deepest abysses in Europe.

You will then return to the Fattoria dell’Oasi, where your grandmother will be waiting for you to prepare ricotta cheese, which you will eat warm among the starters. You will have an excellent lunch with local foods, including locally produced cold meats and cheeses, homemade cavatelli, cooked in a pot over wood in the fireplace, sausage, roast pork ribs with potatoes.

You will end the beautiful day admiring the homemade preparation of caciocavallo cheese. Free dinner and overnight stay in the hotel.

Day 5: Frosolone and Sant'Elena Sannita

Breakfast and departure for Frosolone, a simple village, typical of Southern Italy. It still preserves its centuries-old traditions, such as blade forging and cheese production.

You will discover the life of this village, listed as one of “Italy’s most beautiful villages” through the work and stories of the master knife makers and the genuine flavours of the cheeses. They are made by local cheesemakers, who preserve the production methods of times gone by.

The tools they make are true works of art, kept in the Museum of Cutting Tools. They have made the master knife makers of Frosolone famous all over the world.

After this incredible experience, you will be welcomed at the Casetta del Pastore (Shepherd’s House) where skilled cheesemakers transform the milk produced by their cows into tasty and genuine products. After admiring the processing, you will be enraptured by the taste of the freshly produced cheese. Here you can take a dip in taste with a selection of local products, including wine, bread, cheese and ricotta.

You can also take part in the preparation and tasting of typical Molise polenta topped with a pork meat sauce, a unique experience especially for the palate.

In the afternoon, you will leave for Sant’Elena Sannita, famous for its Perfume Museum. Two floors of exhibition, about 1400 pieces of modern perfumery (early 1900s) enclosed in prestigious cabinets.
